Can ChatGPT or Claude Run Your Outbound?
“I’m can use ChatGPT / Claude for outbound. Why do I need Coolie?”
A Quick Introduction
I'm Shabbir, co-founder of Coolie and a 2x founder with 11 years in sales. I've sent, received, and analysed over 628,000 cold emails and LinkedIn DMs — enough to know that the way most teams still do outbound stopped working around 2024.

Outbound itself is alive. 75% of my qualified meetings this quarter came from email and LinkedIn — using the exact system in this playbook. What's dead is the spray-and-pray version of it: cold lists, templated personalisation, and "Congrats on the funding!" openers.
What replaced it is a system where Claude does the thinking, Coolie does the execution, and you approve and close. Read this end to end and you’ll have the same setup my team uses to book 18+ qualified conversations a week.

Every week I get on calls with founders who open the same way:
“I’m already using ChatGPT / Claude for outbound. Why do I need Coolie?”
Fair question. If you can prompt an LLM to write a cold email, why pay for a GTM platform?
I’ve spent 11 years in sales and analysed 628,000 cold emails. Here’s the honest answer — what LLMs can do brilliantly, what they can’t do at all, and where the real line is between a chat window and a system that books meetings.
What ChatGPT and Claude Are Genuinely Great At
Let’s start with what works. Modern LLMs are legitimately good at a chunk of outbound work:
- Writing a cold email once you’ve given them the context. Paste in the prospect’s role, the signal, your value prop — you’ll get a solid first draft in 10 seconds.
- Rewriting a message in a different tone. More casual, more direct, shorter, in French.
- Brainstorming subject lines. 20 variants, no problem.
- Summarising a LinkedIn profile if you paste the text in.
- Explaining what a company does based on public information.
- Drafting a follow-up if you paste the thread back in.
If your job is to send 10 emails a week to prospects you already know by name, an LLM is probably all you need.
But that’s not outbound. That’s correspondence.
Real outbound is a system that runs continuously — finding people in-market today, researching them at depth, writing a sequence, sending across channels, following up based on behaviour, and feeding what works back into the next cohort.
That’s where the LLM stops. Not because it’s not smart enough. Because it was never built to do any of this.
What ChatGPT and Claude Fundamentally Cannot Do
Here’s the honest list. None of this is a knock on the models — it’s just reality:
1. They can’t find prospects on their own
An LLM doesn’t know who at Series B SaaS companies just hired their first VP of Sales. It doesn’t know which companies posted job ads for 3 SDRs this week. It doesn’t know whose competitor renewal is coming up in 90 days.
That data lives in LinkedIn, job boards, news APIs, financial filings, etc.
The LLM has none of it in real time.
If you don’t feed it a list, it has nothing to work on.
2. They can’t monitor buying signals 24/7
The whole point of modern outbound is reaching someone when a signal fires — a funding round, a competitor comment, a job change, a hiring spree.
ChatGPT and Claude don’t watch anything. They respond when you ask.
3. They can’t send messages
This is the one most founders miss. Even if the LLM writes a perfect email, you still have to send it. From your inbox. One at a time. Or paste it into your sequencer.
Multiply that by 30 prospects a day and you’ve just built yourself a copy-paste job.
LinkedIn is worse — no API, strict rate limits, and account restrictions if you try to automate it yourself. The LLM can draft the perfect LinkedIn DM. It cannot open LinkedIn and send it.
4. They can’t do deep research at scale
You can prompt Claude: “Research this prospect.” It’ll search the web and give you a summary. Fine for one prospect. Try doing it for 30 prospects every morning and you’ll spend 7+ hours per day in a chat window.
More importantly: the research most LLMs do is Level 1 — “what happened.” Level 3 research (the actual tension this signal creates for this specific role at this specific company) requires 300+ data points per prospect, scored against your value prop, ranked by relevance.
That’s not a prompt. That’s an agent.
5. They can’t orchestrate across channels
Day 1 LinkedIn → Day 1 email → Day 3 cold call → Day 4 email → Day 5 LinkedIn — all anchored to the same tension, each adapted to the channel, timed around the prospect’s actual behaviour.
An LLM can’t track who opened what, who accepted the connection, who left you on read. It has no memory of your sequences. It doesn’t know what to send next because it doesn’t know what you sent last.
6. They can’t learn from your pipeline
Which signals produced the best meetings last quarter? Which tensions got the highest reply rates? Which ICP segment closes fastest?
The LLM doesn’t know. It has no persistent view of your pipeline. Every conversation starts cold.
The Honest Comparison
| What you need | ChatGPT / Claude alone | Coolie (via MCP + Claude) |
|---|---|---|
| Draft one email | ✅ Great | ✅ Great |
| Find in-market prospects today | ❌ No data access | ✅ Monitors 40+ signals 24/7 |
| Research 30 prospects at Level 3 depth | ❌ ~7 hours of chat | ✅ Automated, 300+ data points each |
| Send across LinkedIn + email + WhatsApp | ❌ Can’t send | ✅ Native, with rate-limit safety |
| Follow up based on behaviour | ❌ No memory | ✅ Behaviour-triggered sequences |
| Multi-channel orchestration | ❌ You coordinate manually | ✅ One anchor across all channels |
| Learn from what’s working | ❌ Cold every chat | ✅ Pipeline-level feedback loop |
The LLM is the brain. It’s missing the hands, the eyes, and the memory.
The Right Question Isn’t “LLM or Coolie” — It’s “How Do I Give the LLM Hands?”
This is the shift that most founders miss.
You don’t replace Claude with Coolie. You connect them — via MCP (Model Context Protocol) — so Claude can actually act inside your outbound workflow instead of just drafting messages you then have to execute yourself.
Here’s the stack:
- Claude = the intelligence layer. Reasons about your ICP, writes your messages, decides what to send next.
- MCP = the connection layer. Lets Claude talk directly to Coolie, no copy/paste.
- Coolie = the execution layer. Finds the leads, monitors signals, runs the research, sends across LinkedIn + email, respects rate limits, tracks replies.
- You = the validation layer. You approve the leads, review messages before sending, close the deals.
Each layer does what it’s built to do. The LLM stops being a chat window and starts being an actual teammate.
What This Looks Like in Practice: A 10-Minute Setup
Here’s how a founder goes from “I’m pasting things into ChatGPT” to “my outbound runs itself” — in one afternoon.

The Numbers This Produces vs the Numbers You Get Alone
Running outbound through a bare LLM:
- ~1% reply rate (because every message is Level 1 “congrats on the round”)
- ~200 prospects worked per booked meeting
- 3+ hours a day in a chat window pasting things back and forth
- No visibility into what’s working
Running the same system with Coolie + Claude via MCP:
- 14-45% reply rate (because every message is anchored to a Level 3 tension)
- ~25 prospects worked per booked meeting
- 1 hour a week reviewing and approving
- Full visibility into which signals and tensions book meetings
Same intelligence layer. Completely different outcome. The difference is giving the LLM hands.
When ChatGPT or Claude Alone Is Enough
I’ll be fair: there’s a version of outbound where you don’t need Coolie.
- You send <10 emails a week
- You already know every prospect by name
- You have hours to spend in a chat window
- You don’t need to track replies or follow up systematically
- Your deal size is small enough that 1% reply rates still pencil out
If that’s you — honestly, keep using Claude on its own. Don’t buy more software than you need.
But if you’re a founder trying to book meetings while also building the product, closing deals, and running the company — the LLM-only path burns the one thing you don’t have: time.
The Bottom Line
ChatGPT and Claude are brilliant at the thinking part of outbound. They’re not built for the doing part — finding leads, monitoring signals, running research at scale, sending across channels, following up on behaviour, learning from your pipeline.
MCP is what closes the gap. Connect Claude to Coolie and the LLM stops being a chat window. It becomes the brain of a system that actually runs outbound for you.
Not instead of the LLM. Through the LLM.
